Austin drivers already know the BMW X5. It's been a familiar sight on I-35 and MoPac for years, and most people who cross-shop luxury SUVs have at least sat in one. What's changed for 2027 isn't a quick refresh. It's the biggest feature update the X5 has gotten in a long time, and it's headed to BMW of South Austin starting this fall.

The 2027 BMW X5 introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive, hands-free highway driving up to an estimated 85 mph, and design features never before offered on the X5, including 23-inch wheels and an optional front-passenger entertainment screen. Pricing starts at $69,800 MSRP before destination and handling.

At BMW of South Austin, our team has spent years helping drivers across South Austin, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, and Lakeway find the right X5 for Hill Country weekends and I-35 commutes alike. This guide breaks down exactly what's new for 2027, feature by feature, so you know what to expect before it hits our lot.

Key Points: 2027 BMW X5 Features

  • The cabin gets an entirely new operating system. BMW Panoramic iDrive replaces the current iDrive 8.5 setup with a windshield-wide display and a new AI-enhanced voice assistant.

  • Several features are firsts for the X5 nameplate. Slate interior trim, a front-passenger screen, and 23-inch wheels have never been offered on this model before.

  • Highway driving gets genuinely hands-free. The optional Highway Assistant lets drivers take their hands off the wheel at speeds up to an estimated 85 mph on suitable highways.

Line these two model years up and one thing becomes obvious fast. The biggest jump for 2027 isn't horsepower, it's the cabin technology and driver assistance capability. The current X5 already handles Austin traffic well, but it can't drive itself hands-free on the highway or hand the front passenger their own screen for a movie during a road trip to Fredericksburg. That gap is exactly what BMW closed with this redesign.

A New Face: Exterior Design Features on the 2027 X5

The 2027 X5 wears a taller, more upright front end built around a vertically aligned BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow lighting that stays lit day and night. New double-X light icons, a first for BMW, combine the low beams, daytime running lights, side lights, and turn signals into a single element. BMW Winglet door handles sit flush in the B- and C-pillars, and Soft Close comes standard for smoother door operation.

Buyers get 11 exterior colors, including five new to the X5, and 10 wheel designs. Wheels now go up to 23 inches, a first for this model. The optional M Sport Package and M Sport Package Professional add M-specific brakes, trim, and suspension tuning for drivers who want a sharper look and feel.

BMW Panoramic iDrive: The Biggest Cabin Feature Update in Years

BMW Panoramic iDrive is BMW's newest display and control system that links a windshield-wide visual display, a curved central touchscreen, and voice control into one connected interface. It replaces the current iDrive 8.5 system entirely.

BMW Panoramic Vision spans the base of the windshield, showing driving information directly in the driver's line of sight, while the 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display and a standard 3D Head-Up Display round out the setup. The enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant now uses Amazon's Alexa+ AI technology, letting drivers control climate, calls, and media with natural conversation instead of memorized commands. The optional 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Screen, a first for the X5, gives the front passenger their own access to streaming and games.

Comfort Features Built for Texas Summers and Long Drives

The 2027 X5 comes standard with heated sports seats featuring extra cushioning in the seat and backrest, with optional multifunction seats adding ventilation, massage, and four-way lumbar support, useful when the Austin heat index climbs past 100 degrees. A standard panoramic glass sunroof floods the cabin with light without turning it into a greenhouse.

The optional Climate Package adds four-zone climate control, plus heating for the rear seats, steering wheel, and armrests, for the rare cold snap. Audio gets a real upgrade too, with the optional Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System pushing output to as much as 775 watts across 18 speakers with Dolby Atmos support.

Driver Assistance Features That Do More of the Driving

Standard Driving Assistant Plus handles speed control, distance-keeping, and lane centering at the driver's request, useful for the daily grind on I-35. The optional Highway Assistant goes further, allowing hands-free driving for extended periods on suitable highways at speeds up to an estimated 85 mph, with Active Lane Change recommending a lane switch when traffic slows ahead. Optional Parking Assistant Plus adds AI-supported space detection, and Parking Assistant Professional layers in Remote Control Parking through the My BMW App.

Standard safety features include Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, and Emergency Brake Assistant, now able to respond to wildlife crossing the road, a detail that matters on Hill Country back roads.

Which 2027 X5 Package Fits the Features You Want?

The right package depends on which features matter most to you, not just the trim name.

  • Want the full design statement: The M Sport Package Professional adds 22-inch Trigon wheels, M-specific brakes, and an M leather steering wheel.

  • Want comfort and convenience first: The Luxury Package adds automatic doors, while the Climate Package brings four-zone climate and heated rear seats.

  • Want the essentials done right: Standard equipment already includes BMW Panoramic iDrive, Driving Assistant Plus, and the panoramic sunroof.
